7.2.2.3 PWM control Pulse width modulation (PWM) is a modulation technique that generates variable-width pulses to represent the amplitude of an analog input signal. The output switching transistor is on more of the time for a high-amplitude signal and off more of the time for a low-amplitude signal.

Can you PWM a solenoid valve?

The PWM frequency of a “digital” proportional solenoid valve is typically in the range of 25 to 200 Hz. These lower frequencies allow the solenoid to respond (full stroke) over the duty cycle range of control. With “digital” control the solenoid moves full stroke and is held at this position for a duration of time.

  1. So as an example: 120 seconds on + 120 second off.
  2. 120/( 120 +120) x 100.
  3. 120/240 x 100 = 50%
  4. 60% would be: 120 seconds on.
  5. Time off = T.
  6. 60 = 100 x 120/(120 + T)

Does PWM reduce torque?

There are many guys who report that when they reduce the speed of their motors with a typical PWM driver, torque is reduced as well. Some of them say that the PWM reduces the average voltage (due to duty cycle) and thus, the current is also reduced and accordingly the torque is reduced too. That is correct.
